Passport-Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
There have been many inquiries on the on-going
exercise of changing the current passports into
new machine readable (new generation) passports.
To keep you updated here are answers to the
frequently asked questions.
- On Traveling with the Current Passport to Tanzania: Immigration
Headquarters (ImHq) has issued a circular that the
current passport will no longer be valid from
October 1st, 2005. However, for those who wish to
travel back to Tanzania and they do not possess
the new passports, they can travel with the
current ones. In case, you are in this category,
have already processed the documents for the
passport, and have not yet received the passport,
this mission will issue you with a letter of
introduction to the ImHq so that you can collect
the passport after it has been processed.
- On traveling with the Current Passport to other
destinations other than
Tanzania: One needs to process an Emergency Travel
Document (ETD) with this mission that will enable
him/her to travel out and return back to this
country. The ETD will have to be presented to the
authorities together with the current passport as
your visa(s) and other documents are still in that
passport.
- How to process an ETD: Visit our website and go
the Tanzanian Passport page. Print the “OMBI LA PASIPOTI” form, fill it accordingly and send it to
this mission with your current passport, 2
passport size pictures and money order of $ 31.00
as processing fee. Please use the most secure mail
and do not forget to send a prepaid mail for the
mission to send back to you a processed ETD and
your current passport. It takes 3 to 5 working
days to process an ETD.
- Duration of processing new passports:
Processing for new passports will continue until
all those who have not processed have done so.
- On the dispatch of the new passports: We mail
out new passports as soon as we receive them from ImHq to the applicants who reside outside
Washington, DC Metro. In case there is a change of
address, please let us know so that we mail your
passport to the correct address. Walk-in pick-ups
are allowed.
